Effected by the Caitlin Clark Effect

 Well I missed the second round of the NCAA being held in IOWA CITY, and Caitlin Clark's last game in Carver Hawkeye arena.  This was a major disappointment, not to be in Iowa City during a pretty historical event for Iowa City, and the whole state of Iowa.  The woman who broke the all time scoring record in NCAA history for men or women was playing her last game before moving into the pros after this year.

Iowa City must have been buzzing what with that round/two days of NCAA 2024 women's basketball taking place there.  Such rotten luck that I get to the Greyhound station on March 18 to go to Iowa City and discover a CLOSED sign on their door that says they moved on Mar 15 to a parking lot two miles away.  Since I had walked there and the windchill was below freezing I cancelled my trip.

I actually had a second chance to see Caitlin Clark since they won their first round in Iowa City.   I could have at the last minute bought tickets for Monday's game through stubhub online for about $200 and taken a cab or uber to the new Greyhound parking lot site.  But for a couple of reasons I did not.  Standing out in the cold in a parking lot and the prohibitive and dishonest way of selling the tickets deterred me.

This week I found an expose on the Iowa heroine in a local Barnes and Noble.  The photographs of her were top notch, I remember faintly buying a fan magazine back in junior high only then it featured singing groups like The Beatles and the Monkees.

Hope they do well in Albany for the next round.

I hear singing

 Yesterday was a very special day.  I was walking in front of the house headed out to do errands about 10 am when I heard a rustling in the grass.  It repeated itself but when I looked down I couldn't see anything.  Then I heard it again.  It sounded like a large fly.  Finally, I saw a big object flapping its wings really fast. The wings were a big blur.  It was an Iowa locust that appeared to be caught under the netting the Google folks laid down after running the new fiberoptic down along the street.   I was going to go back to my room to get my jar but instead grabbed an envelope from my backpack and scraped the locust into that.  Then I went up to my room, poured the locust into my jar and took a picture of it.  After I took a picture of it I shook the jar and it looked dead as a door nail.  I felt horrible.  I guess I had been a little rough with it when I scooped it into the envelope.  Or maybe the jar had some Clorox bleach remaining in it from the last time I cleaned it.  I

Happy Birthday, Mom

Happy Birthday to Betty Jane Mosell, who lived to the ripe old age of  90 years old.  Born in Chicago, Illinois, Betty ended up living, going to school (Valley High), marrying, and working in DES MOINES, IOWA.  A large part of her life covered a century, 1900-2000.  That is a lot of Des Moines history.  She was a Southsider, living in the same house for many many decades. I woke up this morning trying to remember the various jobs the woman had throughout her life.  There are those who say that one of  the virtues of hiring somebody from the Midwest is that they have a very strong work ethic.  I don't know if that's true anymore, but when I look at my parents and myself, I guess it holds true.  Over her lifetime my mother had more jobs than you can shake a stick at.  Think back to the day when many people were dirt poor but worked hard.  Think of the popular TV shows like The Walton's and Little House on the Prairie . Iowa State Fair-Day 9

Today I rode the Ferris Wheel and the SkyRider at the Fair.  This year I discovered there are two SkyRiders, an East and a West.  I rode the East SkyRider with two friends last Wednesday on Senior Day at the Fair. Seniors got in for $12, rather than the normal adult entry price of $16.   Then on Thursday after the Wednesday Senior Day I went again to the fair this time by myself.  I rode the West SkyGlider.  I think the two SkyGliders are about the same length.  The East one goes from Pioneer Hall (near Gate 5) to  Ye Old Mill near Thrillville (aka the old Midway).  It is the one I have always ridden.  Then JW mentioned the west one.  The West one goes from Thrill Town  (kiddy rides) near Gate 10 to the Bill Riley Stage.  The East SkyGlide is pretty neat  because you go over several trees and feel a certain union with nature as you travel over the many treetops.  The West SkyGlide is neat also because you go over Thrill Town and can look at the neat rides that are designed for the kids
