Monday mellow Monday- leftovers from Fong's Pizza
Today I watched a couple of my favorite movies and also some episodes of Mary Tyler Moore. At the last minute I read the two chapters that we are on in Gil Fronsdale's book called "The Issue at Hand." One chapter was about body awareness and the other was about handling our emotions. We had a pleasant discussion. I took a nap. I did some internet research. I ate a fish sandwhich for lunch and some Ramen noodles for supper. For breakfast I ate the rest of my garlic honey pizza from Fong's Pizza.
I went to Fong's Pizza (223 4th Street) for lunch on Sunday and brought home three slices of leftover pizza. Their pizza is very good fresh but next day mediocre. I asked the waitress there what their most popular item was and she mentioned the crab rangoon pizza and the garlic honey pizza. I decided to order the garlic honey.
I have been wanting to eat at Fong's for a long time so I stopped their on Sunday for lunch. They did not have either of my two favorite beers, Heineken or Negro Modelo, so I had a Michelob Ultra which was OK. I did not know they had supposedly 88 beers on tap and the waitress did not mention it, otherwise I would have ordered one of those.
The pizza was good and I liked the atmosphere. It was small and cozy and the two people I saw, the bartender and the waitress were friendly.
The Des Moines Register database at the public library which I accessed from home had a gazillion articles/advertisements for Fong's pizza. I was surprised to learn that there 3 other locations have all closed and the downtown one is the only one that remains open. At one time, there was a Fong's Pizza in the Drake University area, one in Ankeny, and one in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The downtown store opened up in 2009 by Gwen Page and Dennis Epps.
Over the years Fong's Pizza has made quite a reputation for itself and was even mentioned in Time Magazine, appeared on TV, and been featured and recommended by food critic Eldon Brown. Out of town visitors now make a point of finding downtown Fong's.
In Datebook C Acevedo October 16, 2014 wrote a nice article about the restaurant.
